Artist Statement I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, a gift I believe I was given by God. My passion for art began in elementary school, where I filled a sketchbook with drawings of animals and even sold them to classmates. By junior high, my dedication to art had grown, and one of my teachers purchased several of my watercolor paintings as Christmas gifts for her family.
After high school, I chose to serve my country and was trained as a Dental Lab Technician, a career I pursued for many years. Throughout that time, I continued to nurture my artistic abilities, painting whenever possible. One of my early works, a watercolor titled Old Salt, depicts an elderly fisherman inspired by my father. Before being stationed overseas in the Philippines, I gifted the painting to my father. He later entered it into the SEAA completion, where it received Third Grand prize – becoming the first watercolor to earn such recognition in that competition. I retired in 2017 but continued working part-time while gradually dedicating more time to painting and accepting commissions. In 2023, I filly retired and committed myself to being an artist full-time. Since then, my work has taken on a deeper spiritual dimension. I have created Christian-themed paintings, including The Book of Revelation, a large-scale that illustrates the narrative of the biblical text. This work, measuring 5’ by 6’ feet, took nearly two years to complete and is now displayed in my church in Kentucky. In addition to spiritual themes, I explore a wide range of subjects, particularly marine life and natural landscapes. My work often features vibrant depictions of fish, crab, octopuses, manatees, ocean scenes, Florida landscapes, and birds. I am drawn to subjects rich in color and emotion---images that resonate deeply reflect the beauty of God’s creation. Through my art, I am to celebrate and share the beauty of the world as I see it through my eyes. I consider my art an expression of gratitude for the gift I have been given by God and a way to connect with others through creativity and meaning. |
